The Division of Pain Medicine of the Department of 麻醉学 provides evaluation and treatment for patients who suffer from intractable cancer pain. The faculty and pain fellows provide treatment for specific pain syndromes both malignant and non malignant. Chronic pain management requires a number of techniques to establish the type of pain syndromes and plan appropriate treatment directed towards:

1. Prolonged, tolerable pain relief
2. Reduction of dependency on medications, particularly narcotics as needed
3. Enabling the patient to lead a more productive and active life

A variety of invasive and non-invasive modalities are utilized including:

• Differential Neural Blockade
• Sympathetic and Steroid Blocks
• Neurolyctic Nerve Block Procedures
• Regional infiltration of the muscle

• Cryoanalgesia

• TENS/Interferential Therapy
• Psychological Counseling and Behavior Modification Techniques

For intractable cancer pain, insertion of implantable devices such as Spinal cord stimulators and intrathecal and/or epidural infusion pumps utilizing various narcotics and other agents will also be offered.
